Budgeting glossary: spreadsheet and budgeting terms explained

Plain-English definitions of the budgeting and spreadsheet terms used across this site. Where a term has a named source (like the 50/30/20 split or a vendor’s pricing), it’s linked.
- 50/30/20 rule
- A budgeting guideline that splits after-tax income into 50% needs, 30% wants, and 20% savings and debt repayment, as defined by NerdWallet. Popularized by Elizabeth Warren and Amelia Warren Tyagi (2005).
- Zero-based budgeting
- A method where every dollar of income is assigned a job until income minus allocations equals zero. The method YNAB is built on (“give every dollar a job”).
- Plan vs actual
- A format that compares a planned target per category against actual spending, with a variance column (planned minus actual). The default shape of most spreadsheet templates.
- Variance
- Planned minus actual for a category. Positive means you underspent; negative means you went over.
- Bank sync (aggregation)
- Automatic import of transactions from your bank and card accounts into a tool. Among spreadsheet options, only Tiller ($99/yr) offers it; free templates require manual entry.
- AutoCat
- Tiller’s rule-based feature that automatically assigns categories to imported transactions.
- Sinking fund
- Money set aside gradually for a known future expense (car repair, holidays), so the cost doesn’t hit one month’s budget all at once.
- Needs vs wants
- The distinction at the heart of 50/30/20: needs are essentials (housing, utilities, groceries); wants are discretionary (dining out, entertainment).
- After-tax income
- Your take-home pay after taxes and deductions, the figure the 50/30/20 rule and most spreadsheets budget from.
- One-time-purchase template
- A spreadsheet template you buy once and own, versus a subscription. Typically $9, $29; still manual entry.
- Personal-use license
- The license on free templates like Vertex42’s: you may use the template but not resell or redistribute it.
- SUMIF
- A spreadsheet formula that totals values matching a condition, e.g. all “groceries” rows, the workhorse of category totals in a budget sheet.
